Sail into the Americas Cup 2007 in Valencia Spain

On November 26th, 2003, Valencia, Spain was chosen by the America’s Cup Management, directed by the Swiss, as the host for the upcoming 32nd Edition of the America’s Cup. Switzerland, who won the last edition with their “ Alinghi” sailboat, much to everyone’s surprise, will not be able to host the 2007 event because it does not have any sea outlet. Valencia, on the Mediterranean Sea, is the first European country to host the most esteemed sailing event ever since it started in 1851.

Why Valencia, Spain

More than 50 countries first started contending for this fantastic opportunity, but was slowly reduced and finally Valencia was left to vie with Cascais in Portugal, Marseille in France and Naples in Italy. In the end, this great city was recognized as the best for its climate, with a constant breeze which would guarantee a minimal amount of days that might be lost for lack of winds. In 2003, when this competition was held in Auckland, Australia, there were quite a lot of problems with the rolling brave sea which caused many a day to be wasted. Another, is the way it is set up to handle tourism with good hotel offers, attractions to entertain the people while they are visiting and other types of accomodations to house the staffs and crews. A long, well kept coastline so that the spectators would be able to watch the regattas from the beach, unconditional support from the govenment, the remodelation of the inner dock, therefore converting it into a “ sailing village” complex and as an added extra, tax exemptions for those who sponsor or participate in America Cup related activities. We cannot forget that Valencia is strategically located, with many flight combinations connecting other European countries, maybe even talking about over 300, 000,000 having the chance to be viewers at these events.

Who dares to

The first staging of what the America’s Cup 2007 in Valencia Spain will be like as far as challengers took place on June 15th. The centre city was the great stage for the 11 teams to make themselves known because the final date of inscription was April 29th, 2005.There had been an earlier pre-inscription on December 17th, 2004 where about 8 teams had first shown up, so there was great emotion as to how many more were going to be able to participate and if the same ones that first showed up were going to continue on. It turns out that the final list of challengers is the following-

  • The BMW Oracle from the United States of America
  • The 39 Challenge from Italy
  • Team Shosholoza from South Africa
  • Emirates Team N. Z. from New Zealand
  • Luna Rossa Challenge from Italy
  • K-Challenge from France
  • Victory Challenge from Sweden
  • The Desafio Espanol from Spain
  • Mascalzone Latino C.T. from Italy
  • The United Internet Team from Germany
  • China Team from China

And as the defender, the Alinghi from Switzerland. Ten different countries from five continents, all technologically capable of winning, but many have rumoured that nowadays it depends mainly on how fast the boat goes and not so much on the team. And my questions is, isn’t it the team who has to pilot the boat and make it go correctly? So even if you have the best designed boat with an enormous budget behind you, if the people aboard are not the tops then there is nothing to be done.

I think that the majority of the people who are going to attend this amazing event, other than enjoying the thrills of sailing and seeing magnificent yachts, will also have the option of seeing what Valencia and its people are like when dining out or touring the streets during Fallas. I am sure that everyone will be a winner before, during and after cooperating in the America’s Cup Valencia Spain 2007.
